NVC Frequently Asked Questions |
| General | |||
| Q. | What is the Newport Volleyball Club (NVC)? | ||
| A. | NVC is an association of volleyball players with common objectives: to play on a regular basis, continually strive to improve our level of play, help other members to improve their level of play, and to have fun and meet new people.
We attempt to accomplish this by:

| Q. | How do I join NVC? | ||
| A. | This answer depends on whether you wish to join for the beach or indoor season – see below for specifics. Possible choices for leagues are shown by selecting the top-level menu item Beach Leagues or Indoor leagues. | ||
| Q. | How do I register online? | ||
| A. | During the appropriate season, select the menu item: Join NVC-->Indoor or Join NVC-->Beach. these pages provide detailed instructions on the registration process. | ||
| Q. | I just moved into the area, and want to play volleyball - who do I contact? | ||
| A. | Please use the contact links on the menu to email a message to the beach admins (May - August) or indoor admins (September - April). Someone will reply to you, and explain the available options based on information you send (previous experience, rating, etc.) and if NVC league registrations have already ended.
There are also other indoor leagues in the area (NUWC, YMCA, Bristol, Jamestown, Blue Fish Bowl). Yes, some of these could be considered our 'competition', but NVC just wants more people to play good volleyball, so if our program offerings don't fit your needs, then their programs might. | ||
| Tournaments (General) | |||
| Q. | Do I have to be an NVC member to play in a tournament? | ||
| A. | No, our tournaments are open to the general public, but are still subject to the ratings level for the tournament. Indoor ratings are maintained by Yankee / USVA, and all tournament players must be Yankee / USVA members (membership registration is available at all tournaments). Outdoor players must be AVPNext members (membership registration is available online and at all tournaments) | ||
| Q. | Why do I have to join Yankee / USVA / AVPNext just to play in a tournament? | ||
| A. | These associations maintain a consistent set of tournament rules, player ratings, and safety requirements so that tournaments are fair and safe. They also provide the tournament sites with insurance in case of mishaps. | ||
| Q. | Where are tournaments held? How do I get there? | ||
| A. | The location for each tournament is listed on the tournament page. Select Tournaments-->Beach-->Current for upcoming Beach tournaments or Tournaments-->Indoor-->Current for upcoming Indoor Tournaments. Directions to all locations can be found under the Directions menu item. | ||
| Q. | Why do I have to pay additional fees when paying for tournaments online? | ||
| A. | NVC hasn't raised tournament prices in a couple of years, so to keep them as affordale as possible, we can no longer absorb those fees. | ||
| Q. | How do I know my tournament entry was received and processed? I never received a confirmation email... | ||
| A. | NVC doesn't send a confirmation email. When you submit your registration, it is processed in real time into our system, and you can check that it was received by clicking on the date of the tournament level you entered. All entries for that tournament will be listed, and includes their payment status. | ||
| Tournaments (Indoor) | |||
| Q. | How do I join Yankee? | ||
| A. | Yankee registration is available online, and at all Yankee tournaments. See the Yankee website for more info (Links-->Related) | ||
| Q. | Why do I have to fill in my whole team's roster when I register for a tournament? | ||
| A. | The tournament director needs to verify all team members' Yankee memberships and ratings. A full roster also provides a warm fuzzy indication that the team will not drop out of the tournament. | ||
| Q. | How do I pay for a tournament? | ||
| A. | Indoor tournaments MUST be paid for by noon on the Wednesday before the tournament. This allows enough time for the Tournament Director to make a decision on whether to cancel a tournament if not enough teams sign up. Indoor tournament payments can be mailed in using a check, or paid online using PayPal A PayPal payment button is available when you submit your registration online. You can also come back later and access the paypal button by viewing the entries for the tournament before the registration deadlines. | ||
| Q. | My tournament entry is marked as paid - why am I still on the waiting list? | ||
| A. | When a check or PayPal Payment is received, your team entry will be marked as PAID. The Tournament director will update your team to CONFIRMED if your team's entry fee has been received, and there is room in the tournament. The process of confirming a team is NOT immediate, and may take several days. | ||
| Q. | If I pay for a tournament by check, when is the check deposited? | ||
| A. | NVC's general practice is to make a deposit on the Monday after the tournament. Funds should be available on the day of the tournament. | ||
| Tournaments (Beach) | |||
| Q. | How do I pay for a tournament? | ||
| A. | Beach tournament registration ends Thursday at midnight (subject to change, check tournament page), and advance payment is by PayPal only - no checks. If space is available on the day of the tournament, walk-on registrations are accepted, and payment is CASH only - no checks or credit cards. A PayPal payment button is available when you submit your registration online. You can also come back later and access the paypal button by viewing the entries for the tournament before the registration deadlines. | ||
| Leagues (Indoor) | |||
| Q. | How do I join NVC? | ||
| A. | Indoor leagues are 'draft' leagues – you join as an individual player. At the start of the indoor season, NVC usually has 2 weeks of open house play for people to try out the different levels and types of leagues. This also allows the league captains and other players to evaluate a player’s level, and make recommendations for which league level the player would be best suited to play in. (Yes, it’s similar to ‘trying out’…) By the end of the first week of Open House, all players should register online (see below), and select the leagues they wish to be drafted in. Leagues that have multiple levels (ex: Upper level Men on Tuesdays / Mid-level men on Thursdays) draft the highest level league first, allowing those that do not make the higher level teams to still be drafted onto a team in the other level. Once all the drafts are complete, payments and Yankee membership forms are due. | ||
| Q. | When can I join a league? | ||
| A. | Indoor Season registration begins in October. There is also a very limited opportunity to join for just the second session sometime in Jan/Feb to fill in spots for players that become injured or can’t play in the second session. | ||
| Q. | How much does it cost to join a league? | ||
| A. | Our indoor leagues vary in price depending on the number of teams, the number of players on the team, the length of the sessions, and the amount of time the league needs per night (some leagues have 3 hours, others have 2). Additional fees are required for a one year Yankee membership (currently $35 online or $40 via paper form for 2008-2009) | ||
| Q. | How do I join Yankee? | ||
| A. | If you register for an NVC indoor league, NVC will provide a form for you to fill out and sign. However, it is preferred (and $5 cheaper) if you register online. See Yankee Application for more info. Yankee registration is also available at all Yankee tournaments. | ||
| Q. | Where are the leagues held? How do I get there? | ||
| A. | All the indoor leagues are held at St Michael's Country Day School In Newport. From the menu, select Directions-->Indoor Leagues for a map and directions. | ||
| Leagues (Beach) | |||
| Q. | How do I join NVC? | ||
| A. | Beach leagues are ‘team’ leagues – you must register online with a partner for doubles, and at least 4 players for the 4’s league. Since there are no league drafts, this is a first come first serve registration process. Those who register and pay all fees soonest will have priority in having their registrations accepted. The levels of all players are looked at to see if they are consistent with the level of the league they are registered for, and may be adjusted by NVC administrators. Yes, we do make mistakes every so often, but we do our best… | ||
| Q. | When can I join a league? | ||
| A. | Beach Season registration begins in April. Exact dates are posted on the website when they are known | ||
| Q. | How much does it cost to join a league? | ||
| A. | Prices are published during registration. Additional fees are required for a seasonal AVP membership (currently $10 if you register through the AVP website, or $15 if you want NVC to submit your registration via printed form. | ||
| Q. | How do I join AVP? | ||
| A. | AVP membership registration is available online - this is the preferred method. If you can't register online, your league registration information can be used to print out a form that you will need to sign and provide to the team captain. The captain should include these forms along with the team payment. NVC will submit the forms to AVP for you. | ||

| Q. | I selected a menu item and it’s asking me for a username and password – where do I get these? | ||
